Data Testing - What it's all about
Testing often appears in project plans as a building or quality
process appearing somewhere between development and implementation.
It is not always seen in its true form as a decision process, requiring
at least two outcomes – it works, or it doesn’t. The perceived
outcome is often “greyer” than that – it works,
but “not as quickly as I would like”, or “only with
a limited number of terminals”, or “only if the account
starts with a positive balance”. Testing almost always needs
recoding, revision of data, or the way in which data is stored. The
impact of each of these changes is variable, because each approach
impinges on a different group of people, each with their own deadlines.
Success lies in determining and applying a strategy which involves:
knowing what type of testing to apply
planning the exit strategies from the test process
determining the types of problem that the test outcomes failures
are indicating
